Reducing Repetition in Character Conversations

Character.AI exists because of our users. We're incredibly fortunate to have an engaged community who never hesitates to give us direct feedback about the platform. You tell us when you love something, and more importantly, when you hate it and what we could improve. Today, we’re excited to share a model update that addresses a common user complaint about the Character.AI experience.

While other companies focus on AI as a utility — acting as a search engine or helping with a task like coding — Character.AI is focused on building the future of AI entertainment and exploration. We are creating an immersive and personalized AI experience and, like all forms of entertainment, the user needs to feel engaged.

However, that engaging quality can be disrupted when the Character you’re chatting with becomes overly repetitive. This could mean the Character repeats certain words or phrases over and over, or gets stuck in one situation, stopping the narrative's progress. This unnecessary repetition in Character conversations has been a frequent source of user feedback.

To address this, we recently released a new model that reduces needless repetition by almost 30%. This model is currently being tested with a large portion of users. We accomplished this by aligning the large language model underlying the Character.AI platform to provide less repetitive responses and be more proactive in moving conversations forward.

This doesn't mean that Characters will never repeat a word or that conversations will always progress at a breakneck pace. We're continuing to work on this and other pieces of user feedback across the platform. But we do hope this new model has noticeably enhanced your Character.AI experience in this specific area.

As always, please keep the feedback coming. We're committed to continuously improving the platform based on your input.
