New Feature: Character Voice
Hello Character.AI Community!
Today, Character.AI is excited to begin an early research preview of Character Voice to our c.ai+ Community, a beta feature where users can choose from a selection of pre-made voices to hear the Character speak to them in 1:1 chats. We hope our users have fun interacting with their Characters that now can have a range of voices with nuanced emotion, personality, and tone.
Early testers can:
- Change any Character's voice in 1:1 chats, selecting from a library of pre-made voices
- Seamlessly toggle different Character voices
- Have the choice to enable or disable voice in their chats
- Explore this feature on our mobile app (free to download on iOS and Android)
As of now, the voices supported are in the English language only.
We look forward to our early research previews to the c.ai+ Community. Our goal is to deliver the highest quality product for our users and continuously make improvements to our features. As always, all thoughts, comments, and feedback about the feature are welcome!

Through Voice, conversations can become more deep and meaningful through nuances in tone and emotion. The integration of Voice into our interactions with Characters can not only heighten the sense of realism, but also the power of imagination. For example, many members of our Character.AI Community play text based adventure games with Characters. Voice can now heighten the experience by adding a layer of suspense, thrill, and urgency.

What is Character Voice?
Character Voice is a feature where users can choose to hear Characters speaking to them in 1:1 chats by using a selection of pre-made voices from the Character.AI library.
What are the features and how can I use Character Voice?
With this current feature, users can choose to hear Characters speaking to them in 1:1 chats by using a selection of pre-made voices from our library.
Who can use Character Voice?
Currently, Character Voice is available to c.ai+ subscribers only. We plan to open it up to the public in the coming months.
Can I assign a voice for a Character that I interact with regularly but did not create?
Yes! You can assign our pre-made voices to any 1:1 chat you have with a Character, even if you did not create that specific Character.
Does this feature work for one way communication (Character voice only) or two way conversation (User and Character can both use voice only to chat)?
Currently Character Voice is for one-way communication (Character voice only).
Is this feature available in Group Chat or just 1:1 chats?
Character Voice is currently available in 1:1 chats only.
Can I easily turn this feature off and on? Sometimes I just want to use text.
Yes, to turn it off click the Speaker icon on the top right of the chat.
Where is Voice available? Is this available to use on the app or web?
This feature is currently only available on our mobile app (free to download on iOS and Android).
How is this different from the legacy character-voice / text to speech feature?
Character Voice, just like Character.AI itself, is built entirely from scratch and from the ground up. We built a new audio model for this feature launch that has more richness in voice and also additional options.
What language is this feature available in?
As of now, the voices supported are in the English language only.
