Helping Characters Remember What Matters Most

Ever wish your favorite Character could better remember the important details about you, like your daily rituals or love of mystery books? We’ve got something exciting to share. Starting today, we’re rolling out chat memories — a new improvement to memory on Character.AI for all users.
This is part of our ongoing work to continue to improve memory on Character.AI, and we know from your feedback that better memory is at the top of your most-wanted list. Memory is key to deeper, more immersive conversations.
We’ve already made progress with pinned memories and auto-memories (available to our c.ai+ subscribers), and now we’re adding another layer that’s available to everyone.
So, what are chat memories?
Chat memories give you a space to detail key information about your chat persona or a Character that your Character will remember in your conversation. While we can’t guarantee the Character will always use or reference the information exactly as written, adding it to your chat memories increases the likelihood that it will be incorporated into your Character interactions, especially over longer conversations.
How it works:
In any of your chats, head to the “Memory” section (you’ll find it in the menu when you click on the Character avatar in the upper right of your chat). There, you’ll see a new text box where you can enter up to 400 characters of fixed information.
Let’s take an example:
Say you’re roleplaying as a pirate captain named Leah, and you love chatting with Rosie the Pink Dragon. You’ve talked to her about how much you hate the food on the ship, how your First Mate can never remember instructions, and how you're the youngest of four kids. But you don’t want to reintroduce that information every time.
Now, you can add this to Rosie’s fixed memory:
By adding this information, you’re giving Rosie key details that are less likely to be forgotten, even if your conversation goes on for hundreds of messages.
Tips for writing great Chat Memories:
- Keep it short and to the point
- Be specific about routines, relationships, and preferences
- Use clear, direct language (you only have 400 characters!)
- Update it anytime
This isn’t the final stop on our memory journey. We’ll keep listening to your feedback and improving how memory works on Character.AI to make your conversations feel even more personal, consistent, and fun.
