One Month of (c.ai) series: The Microdrama Ends, The Story Doesn’t
Last month, Character.ai launched (c.ai) series, a Microdramas offering of original short-form, vertical series created by our in-house studio team.
The bet behind the format: that the next generation of fans don’t want to just passively consume content, but actively participate in it. To test this, each of our series was built around Characters that users can engage with after the episodes end.
One month in, that’s exactly what they’re doing. Today, we're sharing early results from the launch and a first look at what's coming next.
Testing The Interactive Thesis
Our goal wasn’t to maximize views or flood the feed with thousands of low-quality episodes. We launched with three series, made by our studio team, and focused on quality and what fans do after they watch.
One series has pulled the community in more than any other.
Last Summer, a romance anime about one friend group's final summer before college, has become the standout of the launch lineup.
The response has validated our thesis that deep engagement drives real value. The first six episodes of Last Summer are free to everyone. Of the viewers who reached episode seven, more than 10% paid to continue the story - a signal that fans pay for content when they feel connected to the stories and Characters.
And when the finale ends, fans are heading somewhere no other Microdrama can take them: into the world of the cast.
Watching Is Just the Start
On most platforms, finishing a series is the end of the experience. On Character.ai, it’s just the beginning.
One month in, more than 40% of over-18 users who finished Last Summer went deeper into the story, opening a Character chat or exploring the cast’s profiles.
And it isn’t a one-off. Of the users who went on to chat with a Character, 25% came back for multiple chat sessions: revisiting favorite moments, asking the questions the episodes left open, and roleplaying new storylines inside the world of the show.
That connection is what separates (c.ai) series from traditional Microdramas, and it's part of our larger ambition to become the #1 AI entertainment platform: a place where people can chat, watch, read, listen, and create around the Characters and stories they love.
The New Expectation for Entertainment
We predict this level of interactivity will become the industry standard. Within the next year or two, fans will finish a show on any major streaming platform and expect to jump straight into its world.
As fans move away from passive viewing toward immersive, co-creative experiences, we're building the formats that meet them there. The future of entertainment is connected, interactive, and fueled by the fans themselves.
What's Next
Last Summer is growing. Short slice-of-life videos are on the way, offering small glimpses of the cast between episodes: Mei and her band, a quiet moment between Ken and Tomi, a darker side of Toshi's life the series never showed. It's more of the world to see, and more to bring into chat with the Characters.
That show is shaping what we make next, too: we're doubling down on anime-styled content.
Our next series is an anime murder mystery with dark academia themes, and our first with interactive episodes, where viewers make choices along the way.
